You Gotta Believe is the only NYC Metro organization that exclusively focuses on finding permanent families for young adults, teens, and pre-teens in foster care. Today, more than 400,000 children are in foster care in the US, and every year, as many as 25,000 of them will age out of the foster care system. In NYC alone, more than 1,000 young people will age out of foster care this year. As many as 50% of youth aging out of foster care will become homelessness; many will be incarcerated or hospitalized and experience health and mental health challenges throughout their lives, and only a tiny percent will have a college degree by age 26.
